Breast reconstruction recovery
The average recovery time for breast reconstruction surgery can also vary depending on the type of procedure used (implants versus flap/fat grafting). However, for most patients, there is a recovery time of about two to six weeks. During this time, you may be limited in your physical activity and should follow your doctor’s recommendations. Immediately following the procedure, you can expect to be kept in the hospital for one to two days.
Breast reconstruction procedural steps
Patients during a mastectomy reconstruction are placed under general anesthesia prior to beginning treatment. For an implant procedure, a pocket will be created and saline or silicone breast implants will be inserted and positioned before suturing the incision closed. For flap procedures, fat may be grafted from other areas of the body (such as the buttocks or thighs) to reconstruct the breast tissue.
Breast reconstruction risks and safety information
As with any surgical procedure, there are some inherent risks that come along with a breast reconstruction after mastectomy. These may include:
- fluid build-up
- changes in sensation
