How Long Does Recovery Take?
Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, so most patients are awake and able to return home as soon as 30 minutes to an hour after the procedure. From there, it will usually take just a few days for any swelling and inflammation to subside; during this time, activities should remain limited. Most patients are fully recovered and able to return to their regular activities (with the doctor’s permission) after the first week of recovery.
What Areas of the Body Can Be Treated?
Just about any area of the body can be treated with this procedure. Chin liposuction and neck liposuction are both common for removing excess fat and sagging around the face. Arm liposuction and thigh liposuction are ideal for those stubborn areas that can be difficult to slim down with diet and exercise alone.
Liposuction of love handles and liposuction of flanks are both some of the most common “target areas,” as the obliques are notorious for being difficult to target with even rigorous exercise. Essentially, anywhere on the body with excess fat is fair game for this procedure.
What Results Can You Expect?
Because liposuction involves the removal of fat cells and deposits directly from the body, the results are instantly visible. For examples of what to expect, you might consider looking at some liposuction before and after photos. Furthermore, once these fat deposits are removed, they do not grow back; even if you do gain some weight in the future, your body will retain more or less the same shape.
Are There Any Risks Involved?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and possible side effects to be aware of before deciding to go through with liposuction. Specific side effects may include:
- nerve damage
- skin ulcerations
- contour deformities
What Happens During Liposuction?
A local anesthetic is infiltrated into the areas to be suctioned and allowed to take effect. Once that has occurred, small suction tubes (cannulae) of varying sizes are used to suction out the unwanted fat. Most procedures take two to three hours total.
