What happens during male breasts reduction surgery?

During male breasts reduction (or man boob surgery), the patient is placed under general anesthesia. An incision is then made around the nipples and excess fat and breast tissue is then removed from underneath the skin. The incisions are closed up with dissolvable sutures and the results are immediately visible. Patients can return home the same day.

What are the risks involved with male breast reduction?

As with any surgical procedure, male breast reduction surgery comes with some inherent risks. These include:

  • Necrosis of skin or nipple (extremely rare)
  • hematoma
  • excessive bleeding
  • scarring
  • swelling

Scarring is the most common risk, but with the proper aftercare, patients can minimize the appearance of scarring.

What can I expect from an initial consultation?

If you have male breasts that you’d like to reduce, you should begin by scheduling an initial consultation with Dr. Ferguson. He will be able to assess your unique situation and determine, based on your physical condition and medical history, whether or not you’re a good candidate for the surgery. This is also a good time to ask any questions you may have so you can be well informed about what to expect from the procedure.

How can I prepare for a male breasts reduction procedure?

Prior to your breast reduction surgery, the main thing you’ll need to do to prepare is to take a week or two off of work and make arrangements to receive help around the house, such as caring for children, yard work, or other strenuous activity. This way, you can relax and have the time you need to properly recover.

How long does recovery take for this procedure?

In most cases, patients will feel fine within a day or two of having a gynecomastia surgery done in our San Antonio office. However, most surgeons will recommend that you refrain from exercise or any other strenuous activity for at least a week after the surgery. This will help to ensure proper healing and minimization of any scarring around the incision areas.

What questions should I ask my surgeon?

Our highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Earl Ferguson, can answer any questions you may have about your procedure. He will provide you with post-procedure information to ensure that your recovery and healing goes as smoothly as possible.

COVID-19 NOTICE

Due to Covid-19, non-essential skin condition appointments will be rescheduled and our offices will be closed until further notice. Our phone lines are still open to receive incoming calls for urgent matters and refills. Please keep in mind that refills will be answered within 24-48 hours from initial call.

We are also offering TeleMedicine as an alternative for those patients who want to keep in touch but do not require in-person care. Most insurances will be honored as usual. TeleMedicine appointments are digital visits, performed from the comfort of your home using your cell phone, tablet or camera-enabled computer. You will be able to speak with and see your provider in real-time. The provider will ask you to use your camera to show them the rash, spot, or condition you are concerned about, and will proceed to counsel you and prescribe medications as applicable, just like an in-office visit.

If you wish to schedule a TeleMedicine or in-office appointment, please call your preferred location.

Finally, take care of yourselves and take care of those within your community.
Please remember that all those working to provide “essential” services are working tirelessly, doing their very best to support you.
